The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger -- A Review

This extraordinary, magical novel is the story of Clare and Henry who have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was thirty-six, and were married when Clare was twenty-two and Henry thirty. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself pulled suddenly into his past or future. His disappearances are spontaneous and his experiences are alternately harrowing and amusing. The Time Traveler's Wife depicts the effects of time travel on Henry and Clare's passionate love for each other with grace and humour. Their struggle to lead normal lives in the face of a force they can neither prevent nor control is intensely moving and entirely unforgettable.

  1. It’s a love story: a very good one.
I could not put this book down.

The story starts with the first time that Henry ever time travels. Then we get the moments that he time travels and he meets Claire. The thing is he’s a 35-40 year old man appearing to his wife as a young child. The reviewers on Amazon who gave it less then four stars all seemed to think this was really creepy and pedophile like. He’s an uncle or something and I did not feel it uncomfortable at all. Then we get to see Claire and Henry meet in current time. Claire has already known him for years, but he is just meeting her for the first time. The story goes on to tell you how they live and cope with him just disappearing and reappearing with out any warning. We don’t always go on every time travel event just the ones that matter.

Niffenegger is a first time author and what an amazing one. She really knows how to tell a story. Unlike a previous novel I read that had time travel in it this one is believable and Henry doesn’t get stuck in one time forever nor does he have to choose one time over the other. I really don’t want to give too much away. So I’m not going to say much more. I have to go with Alicia and say I HIGHLY recommend this book!
